Many people believe they can’t afford therapy. It can be expensive, but there are options other than just paying full fee out of pocket. There are excellent training centers that provide low-fee or sliding scale options for those who qualify. Some training centers, like psychoanalytic institutes, have clinicians who have years of experience and are quite capable but are looking for advanced training in psychoanalysis. This is a great way to get low-fee therapy. Also, there are associates (or pre-licensed clinicians) who need the hours to get licensed and often have a lower fee. Additionally, if you have insurance, see if there are therapists in your network, or if your insurance will reimburse you for the cost of therapy.

I also encourage everyone to consider what they mean when they say they can’t afford therapy. It may be that your budget is tight and any additional cost will cause a huge strain. But maybe it is also hard to give value to yourself and your emotional well-being. Self-care is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself in life. Although a yoga class or massage can bring temporary relief to the stress of life, therapy can be long-term and transformative. Its an investment in yourself and that is the greatest investment of all.
