There are many ways to find a good therapist. If you have a friend or family member who has a therapist they love, that could be a good place to start. That therapist will be able to assist you in giving a few recommendations for clinicians they respect. I also recommend calling your local psychoanalytic institute for referrals. Sometimes they can get you in touch with training therapists who have years of experience but want more training. That may mean discounted treatment. Lastly, I would recommend looking online for profiles such as Psychology Today and finding a few people who seem to speak to you in their bios. Use a phone consultation to see if they have availabilities and are someone that makes you feel heard, understood and valued in the first call. Its absolutely okay to “shop around” and find someone that suits you. Not all therapists are alike and not all therapists are a good fit for you—and thats okay.
